On March 1, 2010, the Oxnard City Council approved $662,000 in funding for much needed interim street repairs. Funding for these repairs was allocated through Measure O, the general half-cent sales tax passed by the City of Oxnard in November of 2008.
While the City continues its efforts to develop and implement a long-term solution for roadway damage, these repairs will consist of thin overlays and localized pavement repairs to address areas affected by recent rains. Repairs will specifically address critical areas of traffic that contain sinkholes, potholes, and other conditions that warrant immediate attention.
The City’s Streets Division will take steps to make significant interim repairs at various locations throughout the city by the end of September 2010, and currently include, but are not limited to the following locations: Channel Islands Blvd., Oxnard Blvd., Vineyard Ave., Victoria Ave., Rice Ave., Sturgis Road--Del Norte to Rice, Eastman Avenue-- Rose to Rice, and alleys in various areas.
Of the $662,000 appropriated to the project, $325,000 will be used for materials and supplies to lay the 3,000 tons of asphalt, $250,000 will be used to purchase a new grinder to level the streets before the asphalt is laid, and $87,000 will be used to cover the 3,300 staff hours needed for 30 days of work on the project.
The City Council’s allocation of Measure “O” funding for much needed street repairs follows an in-depth survey of community concerns. By listening to community concerns that consistently listed roadway maintenance and repairs among its priorities, the City of Oxnard is looking toward 2020 with a clear vision for the future while addressing immediate concerns and needs in the community today.
